Joss Orejel Named Pac-12 Defensive POW, Buffs Ranked No. 21

Colorado Women’s Soccer

Colorado senior left back Joss Orejel was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts in CU’s two wins this past weekend. She led the Buffs to a 1-0 win over TCU on Friday, keeping TCU from recording a shot on goal in the match, while assisting on Taylor Kornieck’s goal. On Sunday, Orejel was key in helping limit to UC Riverside to three total shot attempts in a 6-0 win, adding another assist in that match.

It is the first player of the week award for Orejel. For the team, it is the seventh defensive player of the week award from the Pac-12 since joining the conference in 2011, and the 12th overall player of the week award with the conference. The last CU player to earn a player of the week award was Morgan Stanton on Oct. 11 last season, picking up the defensive award.

Back in the top 25

CU is back in the top 25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll this week, coming in at No. 21. The Buffs were ranked 25th in the preseason, but dropped out last week after a 1-0-1 start to the season. With the record now standing at 3-0-1, the Buffs are ranked once again.

Colorado is also ranked No. 16 by Top Drawer Soccer and No. 18 by Soccer America.

Big matches this weekend

CU will host CSUN at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Prentup Field and BYU at 1 p.m. on Monday. Both opponents are off to solid starts this season and BYU was ranked in the USC top 25 until this week (now receiving votes). CSUN is 2-0-2 with a 1-1 draw against No. 24 Long Beach State. BYU is 0-1-2, but has played a brutal schedule this far, including current No. 4-ranked Penn State on the road.

The Buffs have developed a recent rivalry with BYU, knocking the Cougars out of the NCAA Tournament in 2013 and 2014, before falling 2-0 in Provo in 2015 in a regular-season match. Monday should have the feel of a postseason match with the intensity high on both sides as both teams are looking for a top-quality win during the non-conference season.

Promotions this weekend

Saturday’s match against CSUN will have a food drive for the Emergency Family Assistance Association in Boulder. Fans purchasing a ticket to the match will also receive a free ticket to the Sept. 15 volleyball match against Xavier.

On Monday, it is Pedal-to-Prentup Day where fans are encouraged to bike to the game. Anyone riding their bike to the match will receive a free bike light and The Environmental Center will be present for bike maintenance.
