Tuguegarao City reimposes MECQ status

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Oct. 1 (PIA) – – Due to increasing number of Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive cases, the city government here has reimposed its Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) status after the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force concurred today the request of Tuguegarao City Mayor Jefferson Soriano through Cagayan Governor Manuel N. Mamba.

The reimposes status will take effect for 14 days starting midnight of October 3 and will end on October 16, 2020.

Starting Oct. 3, movement of people will be limited; public transport is prohibited including non-essential economic activities; liquor ban will again take effect; and ambulant, street and ‘talipapa’ vendors are also not allowed to operate.

“It pains me to make this decision because I know it will affect our people, especially the poor families, and the businessmen but we have to bite this bullet for us to be able to step up the tide of the rise of COVID cases,” Soriano said.

There are 78 active cases and 19 barangays affected in the city as of press time and the Department of Health had declared that there is already a community transmission in the city as the source of infections of some of the positive cases can no longer be traced.

The mayor also admitted that the city’s isolation and quarantine facilities are now full, which leave some positive patients to be on home quarantine. However, the city government, according to Soriano, is exerting efforts to look for possible means to cater all asymptomatic and mild positive patients in an isolation facility.

During the RIATF meeting held today, Soriano has requested Department of Education (DepEd) Regional Director Estela Carino to allow the city governmwnt to use the senior high building of the Cagayan National High School to be used as an isolation facility.

He also stated that the city will provide some food packs to the marginalized families who will be assessed as severely affected.

Soriano also cleared that there are no additional requirement to be requested to individuals from other towns who are authorized to enter the city while only 20 percent of the workforce in the government offices and private establishments will be allowed.

Soriano appealed to the people to follow the guidelines to be able to arrest the further spike of COVID-19 cases in the city. (MDCT/OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
