The annual tax-exempt weekend provides an opportunity for Texans to stock up on school supplies and more without paying sales tax. But there are requirements you should be aware of before buying.
With the first days of a new school year right around the corner, Texans can capitalize on the state’s annual three-day sales tax holiday on certain purchases this weekend.
Beginning Friday, August 5, and ending Sunday, August 7, all purchases of $100 or less on products including backpacks, clothing, footwear and school supplies can be made without the addition of charged sales tax. Qualifying items are charged individually, meaning you can purchase two $70 backpacks and not pay sales tax for either, even though the total price of goods amounts to more than $100. Purchases can be made from a Texas store as well as online or through the catalog of a company doing business in Texas, according to the Texas Comptroller website.
