What to know about Phoenix, Arizona, 5th largest city in US
Phoenix, Arizona’s capital, is the fifth largest city in the U.S. and a destination for world-class resorts, golf, spring training and award-winning restaurants.
The Republic
Metro Phoenix is a hotbed of growth, with several new developments cropping up around the Valley.
For years, Phoenix and its suburban cities have been among the fastest-growing cities in the nation. That population growth is propelling new developments that reshape the city.
Some fun, like when formerly beloved spots are redeveloped and given new life. Others are banal but useful nonetheless, such as car washes or fast food being constructed on previously vacant land.
Here are a few projects currently under construction in Phoenix.
A new restaurant will replace FilmBar in downtown
Walter Sterling, the restaurateur behind Ocotillo, at Third Street and Osborn Road, is currently redeveloping FilmBar into a new restaurant and bar. The concept hasn’t been revealed yet.
The site is on Second Street between Garfield and McKinley streets, across from Angel’s Trumpet Ale House.
The site was formerly home to Phoenix’s independent movie theater, FilmBar, which opened in 2011. It shut down after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Angie’s Prime Grill in south Phoenix
An Angie’s Prime Grill drive-thru is under construction next to the EOS Fitness and McDonald’s drive-through on the northeast corner of 19th Avenue and Baseline Road in south Phoenix. The anticipated completion date is August 2025.
On the other side of Baseline Road, a 104-acre stretch of land, long home to a wholesale tree nursery, is to be developed into houses, apartments and commercial buildings, including retail stores and restaurants.
Holiday Inn Express
A hotel on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and Osborn Road in midtown Phoenix is being redeveloped into a Holiday Inn Express. It’s slated to open in May 2025.
After renovations are done, the new hotel will include 136 rooms with contemporary designs. The hotel will be geared toward business travelers, those seeking treatment or visiting family at nearby medical facilities, and tourists. The building was previously the Ramada by Wyndham Phoenix Midtown, which closed in 2021.
