Dustin Poirier shocked the MMA and UFC world when he took on rising star Benoît Saint Denis. Saint Denis had been on a five-fight win streak in the welterweight division and was poised for a title shot. Though many believed Poirier would be defeated at UFC 299 on March 9, he rose to the occasion and beat Saint Denis by KO/TKO, propelling himself back into title shot contention.

Poirier would get his title shot against lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 on June 1. Though Poirier kept the pace with his opponent, he ultimately lost to a D’arce Choke in the fifth round. After the loss, Poirier contemplated retirement, especially considering he has been in the fight game since 2009.

Poirier joined “The MMA Hour” and told longtime MMA insider Ariel Helwani he was considering being done. According to Poirier, “I’m leaning towards being done. Especially getting the title fight. How many more times would I need to fight to get myself back into position to fight for the world title? I don’t know. But like I said, I’m not going to do it again. I’m not going to fight five more times trying to earn another title shot.”

Though it would be understandable that Poirier would step away from MMA, he has now made a big decision on his fighting future.

Poirier took to X to announce that he will fight one last time. According to two posts from the famed UFC fighter, he stated, “The Last Dance. Let em know,” and “Uno mas.”

Poirier plans to fight one more time, and now it will be up to the UFC to pit him against a great opponent for his last fight. His last seven fights were against some of the best past and current champions: Conor McGregor twice, Charles Oliveira, Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje, Saint Denis, and Makhachev.

The MMA-loving world had always hoped that Poirier and McGregor would meet again, and that would be a huge final fight for Poirier in the UFC. However, McGregor is still injured and is slated to take on Chandler.

It would be a safe bet to assume McGregor would welcome a fourth bout with Poirier, especially to avenge his last loss, which resulted in a broken leg and three years of having to step away from the octagon.

Another possible retirement fight could be for the BMF (Baddest Mother F*****) against Max Holloway. Holloway fought Jung Chan-sung aka The Korean Zombie for his retirement fight.

Holloway could also establish himself even deeper in the lightweight division if he were to defeat Poirier. Either way, Poirier’s final fight should be one for the record books.
