CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy was killed and six other teens and children were wounded — including a 3-month-old boy — in shootings over the weekend, police siad.
There have been seven shootings involving children and teens since Friday morning, with a total of nine people wounded or killed in the attacks, according to police statistics. Among those wounded in the shootings were a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy.
Two shootings took place blocks apart in Little Village Saturday and early Sunday, including the shooting that critically wounded the infant boy.
In that shooting, a 21-year-old man and the 3-month-old boy were inside a car around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of West 26th Street when another car pulled up, police said.
Two men got out of the car and opened fire before leaving the scene, police said. The 21-year-old was shot multiple times while the boy was shot in his chest.
Both were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition, police said. The relationship between the man and the boy is unclear.
The weekend’s lone fatal shooting involving victims age 17 or under took place around 10:40 a.m. Friday, when a 16-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man were walking in the 2500 block of West 46th Street in Brighton Park when an SUV pulled up, police said. Someone got out of the car and opened fire, striking the 16-year-old in his head and chest and the 40-year-old in his chest and leg, according to police.
Both victims were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, police said. No one is in custody and area detectives are investigating.
The 16-year-old has been identified as Santino Rojas, who lived in the block where he was fatally shot, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Other shootings since Friday to wound juveniles include:
- At approximately 12:40 a.m. Sunday, a 17-year-old boy was standing outside in the 2900 block of West 25th Street in Little Village when he sustained two gunshot wounds to his hand, police said. The victim “wasn’t able to provide further details of the incident,” according to police.
- At around 1:00 a.m. Saturday, a 12-year-old boy was walking on the sidewalk in the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue in Grand Boulevard when someone opened fired, police said. He was struck in his leg and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, according to police.
- At around 10:45 p.m. Friday, a 14-year-old boy was walking down an alley in the 800 block of East 65th Street in Woodlawn, police said. A black Jeep approached the boy and someone inside the car opened fire, according to police. The teenager was struck in his midsection and was taken to the Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.
- At about 9:45 p.m. Friday, a 17-year-old boy was standing on the sidewalk in the 1500 block of West 18th Street in Pilsen when he sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg, police said. He was driven to Stroger Hospital by a friend and was listed in good condition, according to police.
- At roughly 3:30 p.m. Friday, a 17 year-old-boy was standing in the alley in the 5200 block of South Damen Avenue in Back of the Yards when shots were fired, police said. He was shot in his left arm and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, according to police.
No arrests have been made in any of the shootings as detectives continue to investigate, according to police.
