After expansion side Denver Summit FC announced the hiring of head coach Nick Cushing in August of 2025, today the club have finalized their inaugural coaching staff ahead of the 2026 NWSL regular season.

Alongside Cushing will be assistant coaches Angela Salem and Alan Mahon, former Lioness Karen Bardsley as goalkeeper coach, and James Mitchell as video coach.

“Our staff reflects the standards and ambition of this club from day one,” said Nick Cushing, Head Coach of Denver Summit FC. “Each of these individuals brings elite expertise, strong character, and a player-first mindset. Together, we are building an environment that supports high performance, development, and a style of football that our players and fans will be proud of.”

Salem played professional for twelve seasons in the U.S., Australia, and Finland – this includes nine seasons in the NWSL. The assistant coach holds a USSF B License and previously served the same role with Bay FC and Washington Spirit.

After a successful playing career across Europe, Mahon’s transitioned into coaching, including time with the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team and with Manchester City Women.

Former England international Bardsley earned over 80 caps for the Lionesses. After retirement she continued her coaching development through academy leadership and elite player mentoring. It is a homecoming for the goalkeeper coach as she was born in California and previously played at Cal State Fullerton.

After serving as a football analyst with Arsenal Women, Mitchell joins Summit FC as video coach. Mitchell’s experience also includes time with the Scotland Women’s National Team, Washington Spirit, and Florida State University.

The Denver Summit FC will look to make history as only the third expansion side to make the NWSL playoffs.
