Mikey Musumeci has just revealed plans to make his MMA debut, even teasing that he might make an appearance in the UFC soon too. Musumeci has already won almost everything there is to win in the submission grappling world, as the only title that eludes him so far is ADCC gold. Given that he normally competes below their lightest weight class at 66kg and is now tied in to an exclusive contract with UFC BJJ, it seems unlikely he’ll be going for that any time soon. Now it looks like he’s searching for the next big challenge of his career, and he might find it outside grappling altogether.
The topic came up after his most recent title-defense at UFC BJJ 5 and after winning yet another high-profile match by submission, Mikey Musumeci was asked directly about the possibility of moving to MMA in the future:
“I’m doing it like in the next few months, like we’ll announce soon but I’m doing an MMA fight. So immediately after this I get back to training, working more for MMA. But yeah, we’ll see. You might see me in UFC MMA in the near future as well.”
A transition to MMA is almost always up for discussion with elite Jiu-Jitsu competitors but this isn’t even the first time that Musumeci specifically has spoken about doing it. He was previously signed with ONE Championship and the opportunity was there for him to make the switch back then as well, so it has been coming up for a few years now. He even spent time developing his striking skills with some of the elite fighters on their roster, and he always answered positively when asked about it. Despite that, Musumeci never actually made his debut during the years he spent on their roster.
Naturally the questions arose again when Musumeci signed with the UFC, and he said he still had a ‘desire to maybe do MMA again in the future’. Now Musumeci has spent more than a year with the biggest combat sports promotion in the world and has become the face of UFC BJJ as their most dominant champion. He’s also had more opportunities to train with elite MMA fighters through the UFC too, so his MMA skills must be developing even further. Although he didn’t set a date on his MMA debut, the UFC would undoubtedly love to be able to promote one of their BJJ champions on the main show.
