LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A number of small businesses call for continued progress to revamp and revitalize the Historic Commercial Center.
The calls from business owners come as county leaders consider the future of Orleans Square, and many locals want the structures saved.
Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom tells FOX5, his presentation before the Redevelopment Agency on Wednesday shares a message: “know and reflect on how far we’ve come.”
“This area of town was the most dangerous area in all of Clark County,” Segerblom tells FOX5, noting a history of problems for business break-ins and homeless camps. The county added full-time patrols for security, and since then, businesses have noted improved safety. More customers feel safe coming to the Center, businesses tell county leaders.
The county has also invested in additional lighting, repaving of alleyways, and has bought different buildings for community and small business development.
Segerblom tells FOX5, he’s working to convince the commission to rehabilitate Orleans Square. FOX5 told you how the building needs significant upgrades to bring the entire building up to code for walls, fire sprinklers, alarms, bathrooms, elevators and accessibility for people with disabilities.
Since the Commercial Center is a redevelopment area, property tax dollars can be reinvested into improvements, Segerblom said.
“I hope that you see the same things that we see there, and the community is coming together for Commercial Center,” said Monica Gresser of Brazen Architecture to the Agency at the meeting. She was one of a number of small businesses calling for continued investment, small business support, and direction for growth.
“Now is probably not the right time to start knocking things down. Let’s get the businesses built up. Let’s start making a little bit of money for the community again. Show this neighborhood what it’s supposed to be,” said Damian Costa, who spoke to FOX5 outside his business, The Composers Room.
According to Segerblom, it will be at least a couple of months before the Agency will revisit the issue of Orleans Square. For now, county officials are looking at options to improve the parking and make it more user-friendly and suitable for live events.
