TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – The League of Mexican American Women is one of the longest-standing participants in the Tucson Rodeo Parade.
The group has spent the week at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds putting the finishing touches on this year’s float, which ties into the parade’s theme of celebrating America’s 250th birthday.
Among those riding on the float will be three Florecitas — young women around the age of 15 who earn their place by selling raffle tickets and fundraising for the league. Organizers said the program is designed to teach youth the importance of community service.
The money the Florecitas raise goes toward scholarships for higher education in Arizona.
“The main reason for them to raise the money is because we provide scholarships for students who are going to a college or university in the state of Arizona or a trade school,” said Yvette Moreno, vice president of the League of Mexican American Women. “And you don’t even have to be Hispanic.”
The league’s float incorporates traditional Hispanic culture alongside a fresh theme each year. Moreno said the organization’s longevity is a reflection of both its longtime members and the new voices they bring in.
“We have some members that have been involved with the league for over 40 years, and it continues,” Moreno said. “And with new people coming in, we have different ideas, but we try to also incorporate and keep the tradition.”
The League of Mexican American Women’s float will appear in the Tucson Rodeo Parade this Thursday morning beginning at 9 a.m.
