MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF/WIS) – A man born in the Pee Dee who took South Carolina’s political world by storm has died.
Alvin Greene died on Tuesday at McLeod Health Clarendon in Manning, South Carolina, according to his obituary. He was 48.
In 2010, Greene was an unemployed military veteran who sent South Carolina politics into a tailspin with a shocking U.S. Senate run after pulling an unexpected victory in the June 8 primaries.
Greene, who was born in Florence, managed to squeak through the primaries without a website or a concrete campaign. He defeated former state lawmaker Vic Rawl, an established politician, in the Democratic primary.
That victory thrust him into constant media attention, including frequent national coverage.
Greene ultimately lost the Senate race to U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, a Republican.
Before the November election, Greene was charged with allegedly showing pornography to a female University of South Carolina student in an on-campus computer lab. He accepted entry into a pretrial intervention program to have that charge erased.
He told Live 5 News in Charleston, while announcing his debut as a superhero in a comic book called “The Ultimate Warrior,” that he would run for office all over again despite the loss.
After his Senate loss, Greene ran for a vacant seat in the state House of Representatives in Clarendon County’s 64th District. He received only 37 votes in that primary.
Greene moved to Manning, South Carolina, and graduated from Manning High School in 1995, according to the obituary.
He then graduated from the University of South Carolina before serving the U.S. military for 15 years.
