  • AHLA: Hotel operations and visitor spending fuel $7.2B in Phoenix’s economy.
  • Guests spend $4B annually, averaging $641 per room night.
  • The city’s 168 hotels offer 25,164 rooms and nearly 6.5 million room nights yearly

HOTEL OPERATIONS AND visitor spending generate $7.2 billion in economic activity in Phoenix, according to a report by the American Hotel & Lodging Association. The industry supports more than 42,000 jobs and contributes $1.1 billion in federal, state and local tax revenue.

The AHLA-commissioned Oxford Economics study found that hotel guests spend more than $4 billion annually in Phoenix, or $641 per room night and showed how hotels support small businesses and local employment.

“Hotels in Phoenix are more than places to stay. They are centers of opportunity,” said Rosanna Maietta, AHLA’s president and CEO. “This report shows how deeply our industry is woven into the region’s economic and social fabric. When hotels thrive, they create jobs, support small businesses, and deliver tax revenue that benefits every Arizona resident. Continued investment and smart policy will fuel that momentum.”

Phoenix has 25,164 hotel rooms and nearly 6.5 million annual room nights across 168 hotels, with 2,312 additional rooms in development. Visitor spending in Phoenix and statewide supports multiple industries and taxes from hotel operations and guests fund public services.

Phoenix Councilman Kevin Robinson said hotels drive jobs, support small businesses, and generate tax revenue.

“Through smart policymaking, we can ensure the hospitality sector grows and adapts, strengthening competitiveness and expanding opportunity across Arizona,” Robinson said.

The hotel industry directly employs 9,776 workers, providing $627.9 million in wages and supports a total of 42,237 direct and indirect jobs. It contributes $538.7 million in federal tax revenue, $260.3 million in state tax revenue and $257.2 million in local tax revenue annually.

A recent CoStar study found that in 2026, New York City and Phoenix will add the most U.S. hotel rooms, with 4,852 in New York City and 3,650 in Phoenix.
