Baton Rouge thrives because of the women shaping its small-business community. From fulfilling lifelong dreams to balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, these business owners continue to grow the city’s economy while creating spaces to connect and gather.

This women’s history month, we’re highlighting seven local businesses, owned and operated by women, that are a focal point for student and community life.

Pinspiration

Sisters Shana Baker and Erin Metoyer opened Pinspiration in November 2020, bringing the craft and DIY studio franchise to Baton Rouge. Pinspiration offers countless hands-on projects, from pillow and sign making to painted pumpkin and wine glasses. They also host parties for sororities, birthdays, bridal showers and more. However, its standout attraction is by far the Splatter Room, a messy and creative experience where guests gear up in booties, smocks and glasses and let their imaginations run wild. The floor-to-ceiling paint-filled room is perfect if you’re planning an event or just have an afternoon off and want to let out some steam.

Brew Ha-Ha

This local coffee shop has been a student staple and late night study spot since 2004 when owner Gabby Loubiere opened its doors. According to her website, she did so in order to balance being able to work and be a full-time mom. Since opening, Loubiere has expanded Brew Ha-Ha into a full bakery, and they began roasting their own coffee in 2019. Now, she also co-owns the gym next door, The Block Fit. Brew Ha-Ha’s menu is complete with all flavors of coffees, smoothies and treats to keep you energized all day long.

Salon du Sud

After graduating cosmetology school in 2011 and working at another Baton Rouge salon for three years, Brittany Thrower founded Salon du Sud, according to the salon’s website. The name, meaning “salon of the south” came from the goal of creating a warm and comforting environment for guests. Services include hair color, cuts and styling, as well as makeup, waxings, spray tans and more.

Gilded Artichoke

One of Baton Rouge’s top-rated catering companies, Gilded Artichoke was founded in 2016 by LSU alumna Lisa Boudreaux. With nearly 30 years of experience in the restaurant and hospitality business, Bourdreaux launched the business after mastering culinary skills in private and corporate catering work. According to the company’s website, “Lisa is proud to be a woman owned and operated business employing mostly women.” Gilded Artichoke is a full-service catering company that specializes in customized menus, bar services and professional staff for events ranging from weddings to corporate gatherings.

ToneBR

Looking to break a sweat? ToneBR has all the resources needed to do so. Founded by LSU alumna Lauren Temple, the studio was born from a merger combining her previous Pilates Plus studio with an acquisition of TreadBR, according to the Baton Rouge Business Report in 2022. Now, the studio has two locations, one in Southdowns Shopping Center and another on Highland Road. ToneBR offers numerous classes, from Lagree Pilates to Mommy and Me. The studio also provides bridal membership discounts and nutrition coaching for you to look and feel your best.

The Foyer

If your dorm or apartment is looking a little dull, The Foyer’s collection of decor, art and accessories has everything you need to liven up your home and life. Founded and owned by LSU alumna Laura Rentrop, the space features work from a wide range of local artists, celebrating the people that make this community so special. The shop is also completed with Heather V’s Cafe to grab lunch while viewing the unique selection of goods and gifts.

Vertage Clothing

If you’re hoping to upgrade your wardrobe this spring, Vertage Clothing has perfectly curated pieces for any style. Founded in 2000 by Heather Henry Gahagan, the storefront is located on Perkins Road and has a selection you could spend hours browsing. With a trendy yet affordable selection, students can find outfits for events, class and more.
