INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) – More than 3,500 NIPSCO customers were overcharged double their actual natural gas usage following the company’s rollout of a new metering system, according to filings from the state’s utility watchdog.
NIPSCO has been installing Advanced Metering Infrastructure, or AMI, since March 2024. The company said the technology allows it to read meters remotely.
State filings indicate the new system resulted in incorrect billings for more than 3,500 customers, who were charged double their actual gas usage.
NIPSCO discovered the issue in October 2024 but did not report it to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, or IURC, until November 2025.
NIPSCO said less than one percent of its natural gas customers are impacted. The company is offering 12-month billing adjustments to affected customers and is sending letters and emails to those impacted.
Customers are encouraged to check their mailbox or any email address connected to their NIPSCO service account.
