SAN ANTONIO – In a bold move to combat food insecurity plaguing millions of Texans, H-E-B Chairman Charles Butt announced Thursday a monumental personal donation of $20 million to bolster the efforts of 20 food banks across the state.

This generous contribution, directed towards organizations within the Feeding Texas network, underscores H-E-B’s unwavering commitment to addressing hunger relief in the Lone Star State.

The thought of children going hungry anywhere is painful, but to have that happen here in Texas is unacceptable. My aim is to support access to essential food programs and invest in solutions for Texans. By supporting the hunger relief efforts of these dedicated organizations, we hope to make a meaningful and positive impact across the state, said H-E-B Chairman Charles Butt.

The statistics surrounding food insecurity in Texas are staggering. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas ranks as the second-most food-insecure state in the nation. A startling four million Texans grapple with food insecurity, with a significant portion—20 percent—being children, as reported by Feeding Texas.

H-E-B’s dedication to hunger relief is deeply ingrained in its ethos, dating back to the company’s inception in 1905. From its humble beginnings, H-E-B has recognized the pressing need to support communities facing food insecurity. Last year alone, through its Hunger Relief program, H-E-B donated over 33 million pounds of food to families in need across Texas.

Since its inception in 1982, H-E-B’s Hunger Relief program has been an instrumental force in combating hunger, distributing over one billion pounds of food to 5,500 non-profit organizations in Texas and Mexico. This sustained effort underscores H-E-B’s enduring commitment to uplifting communities and ensuring that no Texan goes to bed hungry.

Charles Butt’s recent $20 million donation marks a significant milestone in H-E-B’s ongoing mission to address food insecurity in Texas. By supporting food banks across the state, this generous contribution will have a tangible impact on the lives of millions of Texans, providing much-needed nourishment to those in need, particularly children who are disproportionately affected by hunger.

Beyond the immediate relief provided by this donation, H-E-B’s investment in hunger relief initiatives serves as a beacon of hope for communities across Texas. It highlights the power of corporate philanthropy to effect positive change and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling complex societal issues.

As Texas grapples with the persistent challenge of food insecurity, Charles Butt’s visionary leadership and H-E-B’s steadfast dedication to the cause offer a ray of hope for a brighter, more nourished future for all Texans. Through collective action and unwavering commitment, we can work towards a day when hunger is no longer a barrier to the well-being of our communities.
