What to know about the NBA on NBC games this week

This week’s slate of NBA on NBC games is made up almost entirely of playoff contenders, and we’ve got both a doubleheader on Sunday and a tripleheader on Monday. We’ve also got multiple games from key squads, including two from the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, and two from a top Eastern Conference hopeful, the New York Knicks.

New York Knicks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

Sunday Night Basketball tips off with this matchup that could, if things go well for both teams, end up as a preview of the NBA Finals. The Thunder are the most dominant squad in the league, and they’re already set with a playoff berth. The Knicks, on the other hand, are still fighting for position in the East, though an automatic berth seems likely, and they’re also trying to prove they belong at the top of the East.

NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico, Reggie Miller, and Zora Stephenson will call Knicks-Thunder.

Golden State Warriors vs. Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets are in a solid spot heading into the playoffs thanks to continued excellence from their stars, three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic and All-Star Jamal Murray. Meanwhile, the Warriors are trying to pick up the pieces after injury devastated the team in the final weeks of the regular season. Whoever’s on the court, though, the Warriors will be fighting hard to hold on to their Play-In Tournament spot!

NBC Sports’ Noah Eagle, Jamal Crawford, and Ashley ShahAhmadi will call Warriors-Nuggets.

Philadelphia 76ers vs. Miami Heat

The first four spots in the Eastern Conference standings are pretty well set, but the rest of the postseason field is wide open, and both the Sixers and the Heat are right on the cusp of automatic playoff berths. The Heat may need the win more than the Sixers, but if either team is hoping to avoid the Play-In Tournament and get right down to postseason business, this is a must-win.

NBC Sports’ Mark Followill, Brian Scalabrine, and Jordan Cornette will call 76ers-Heat.

Chicago Bulls vs. San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs are the second best team in the West, and they’ve already clinched their division behind center/unicorn Victor Wembanyama’s MVP caliber. But there’s still plenty to fight for, what with the top seed in the Western Conference still on the line, and the league-leading Thunder in their sights.

NBC Sports’ Terry Gannon, Mike Fratello, and John Fanta will call Bulls-Spurs.

Detroit Pistons vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

For the second Thunder outing on the NBA on NBC this week, they’ll host the Pistons, who lead the Eastern Conference in dominant fashion. Both teams have impressively already clinched playoff spots, so this could be a preview of this year’s NBA Finals. Keep an eye on the talent involved, including current league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and how the matchups look.

NBC Sports’ Michael Grady will call the action with “On the Bench” analysts Robbie Hummel (Thunder) and Austin Rivers (Pistons).

New York Knicks vs. Houston Rockets

Jalen Brunson and the Knicks have hovered near the top of the East all season, while Kevin Durant and the Rockets are a bit more of a bubble team. Right now, just a couple of games separate Houston from an automatic postseason bid and a trip to the Play-In, so they need wins, and they’ll be looking to get one against a very tough Knicks squad.

NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico, Reggie Miller, and Zora Stephenson will call Knicks-Rockets.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. Los Angeles Clippers

These two teams are virtually neck and neck in the Western Conference, with both hovering in Play-In territory. The right combination of wins could propel either team to a better playoff spot, or at least a better Play-In seed, so they’ll be duking it out to see who can claim the best record.

NBC Sports’ Noah Eagle, Derek Fisher, and Grant Liffmann will call Trail Blazers-Clippers.
