Union, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team took both ends of a doubleheader against John Jay College in a non-conference tilt on Monday afternoon.
The Ducks (14-10) took the first game 10-0 in five innings before taking game two 5-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks wasted little time, putting up six runs in the top of the first. Emma Quattrochi led off with a four-pitch walk and promptly stole second. Two batters later, Carmelita Murphy-Brown doubled, scoring Quattrochi from first. A single by Maria Dante and walks to Adrianna Albania and Riley Lawrence filled the bases and Kacey DiPasquale launched a grand slam over the left-center field fence.
Stevens tacked on two runs in the second as Albano and DiPasquale each drew bases-loaded walks. The visitors put up two more in the third, as Madison DiSarno reached on a one-out error. The first-year scored on a single by Jessica Hsu as Murphy-Brown crossed the plate on a throwing error.
The Bloodhounds threatened in the bottom of the fourth. A one-out walk and single put their first runner in scoring position, but Hsu notched back-to-back groundouts to squash the threat.
Neither side was able to score over the first three frames of game two, but Stevens had runners on in each inning. Murphy-Brown singled with two outs in the first as DiPasquale led off the second with a knock to left, but both were unable to score. In the third, Lilian Cournoyer doubled down the left field line to lead off but could not score despite moving to third.
The Ducks broke through in the fourth, scoring five times with two outs. Lawrence ripped a two-out triple down the right field line, scoring DiPasquale, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. The sophomore came home on a wild pitch, as Larissa Cooper walked. After Cournoyer walked to put runners on first and second, Quattrochi laced a double off the left-center field wall, scoring both. After a stolen base, DiSarno scored Quattrochi with an RBI single.
John Jay got a tally back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on an RBI groundout. The Bloodhounds added one more in the fifth and seemed poised to add more in the sixth. They put runners on second and third with no outs and on a fly ball to center, a runner tried to score. Quattrochi made the catch and threw a strike home for the double play. Ella Tozduman closed the frame with a groundout and no runs scoring.
Down to their final outs in the seventh, the Bloodhounds made it a one-run affair with a two-run home run to right-center. Hsu came in and got the final two outs on a groundout to seal the win.
