ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Buckhead nightclub has agreed to close its doors until Aug. 1 following a deadly shooting last month, according to Atlanta’s Office of the City Solicitor.
Nearly two weeks ago, the city began seeking a temporary restraining order against Elleven 45 Lounge, its manager, the property owner’s company, and others. The order would stop the club from holding events or serving patrons.
On August 1, the two parties will meet again in court to argue the order.
The city previously said it would take “any necessary action” to keep the community safe, citing the May 12 shooting that broke out at the club. Six people were injured and two died at the scene, police said.
“After this incident, I said there are several tools at our disposal and we will not hesitate to leverage any of them to keep our communities safe and thriving,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement. “This particular location has a history of violations over the years, and I thank the Superior Court for today’s action to help move toward our longer-term goal of shutting this venue down for good.”
News of the club’s temporary closure comes the same day police announced an arrest in the case. Karanji Reese, 21, surrendered himself to Atlanta police on Wednesday. He faces charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, police said.
“With the help of her friends, her sister, her father, we’re just all coming together, trying to be strong and be there for Mari, and just fight for her, and be strong for her,” said Tracey Eason, the mother of Mari Creighton.
The parents of Mari Creighton, one of the two victims and a student at Albany State University, filed a lawsuit against the club and other parties on Tuesday. The suit alleges negligence and premises liability.
“They allowed people to come into their establishment with firearms, and now my sister isn’t here, and my family will never be the same,” said Tiffany Eason, the sister of the late Creighton.
