The Denver Broncos aren’t signing Kurt Warner’s son, at least not right now.

Fresno State quarterback E.J. Warner (6-0, 203 pounds) was one of 33 rookies who got a tryout at Denver’s rookie minicamp over the weekend. Broncos coach Sean Payton praised Warner on Saturday, but the 22-year-old quarterback was not offered a contract, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Warner’s dad is a Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback, but Payton shrugged off comparisons to the QB’s father.

“He’s entirely different,” Payton said of the younger Warner. “He’s just really stood out with getting in and out of the huddle. He has a quick release and a good stroke. [He’s a] different type [of] player even. He’s probably more celebrated coming out of Fresno [State] than his dad was coming out of Northern Iowa.”

Payton compared E.J. to one of his former backup quarterbacks with the New Orleans Saints.

“This Warner reminds me a lot of Chase Daniel,” Payton said. “If you see his height, weight, size, speed, they’re very similar. He’s done a nice job. He’s done a very nice job and especially considering he’s coming off a weekend with different terminology, and he’s kind of yawned at it. It’s been real quick for him.”

Veteran quarterback Nathan Peterman also tried out at rookie minicamp, and he wasn’t signed, either. As of the time of publication, Denver has signed one tryout rookie (CB Paul Manning) and one veteran tryout player (WR Mike Woods). The Broncos might consider Warner down the road, but they’re sticking with their current QBs for now.
