Montrose’s nearly $9 million sidewalk-improvement project to begin soon

The $8.9 million Montrose Safe Routes to School project will soon enhance safety with ADA-compliant sidewalks.

HOUSTON — A long-anticipated initiative to enhance safety for those walking to school on Montrose sidewalks will begin soon.

The $8.9 million Montrose Safe Routes to School Connections Project is designed to improve safety and provide easier access for students and parents traveling to nearby schools such as Wharton Dual Language Academy, Gregory Lincoln Education Center and Carnegie Vanguard High School.

Construction of the project is slated to start in August and take about a year, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

The project will replace and widen approximately 4.5 miles of sidewalks to a uniform, ADA-compliant width of 6 feet. Improvements will extend from Fairview Street to West Dallas Street and from Taft Street past Montrose Boulevard to Eberhard and Van Buren streets.

Improvements also will include:

Driveway replacement, wheelchair ramp replacement
Intersection asphalt mill and overlay of five intersections to eliminate ADA barriers.
