The Oswego County Health Department reminds local employers about New York State legislation changes for first-aid kits in the workplace. Under a new law, employers that are currently federally mandated to maintain first-aid supplies must now also include opioid overdose reversal medication in their kits.

The law, Senate Bill S5922-A/A2725-A, was signed on Dec. 12 of last year and takes effect on June 10.

This new legislation aims to reduce opioid-related deaths by ensuring that life-saving overdose antagonists such as Naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, are available in workplaces.

Employers that fall under this regulation should confirm that an agent which counteracts overdoses is available at each of their locations, update any first-aid procedures and policies, and provide training on the new requirements.

Those required to have Naloxone on-site can obtain it at no cost through the Oswego County Health Department. The department also offers training for employees on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose.

To request Naloxone or schedule a training, visit https://health.oswegocountyny.gov/overdose_prevention.php or call the Health Department at 315-349-8318.
