El Pollo Supremo is a favorite of metro Phoenix chefs

Nadia Holguin and Armando Hernandez, owners of Tacos Chiwas, stopped at El Pollo Supremo in Tempe for one of their favorite meals.

A popular Valley restaurant was recently invited to cook for celebrities at an event celebrating Latinx artists and innovators.

The third annual Culture Makers event, hosted by Jessica Alba and Tracy Brennan, took place at Sofía Vergara’s Beverly Hills home on Monday, June 9. The event was created to honor Latinx creatives in Hollywood, but Latinx chefs have also been given a spotlight at the event over its three-year run.

The Cocina Chiwas team — including James Beard semifinalists Nadia Holguin, Armando Hernandez and Roberto Centeno — was personally invited to the event by Alba herself. It was the restaurant’s second year attending, Hernandez told The Republic.

Alba was introduced to Cocina Chiwas in 2024 when she was in Tempe for a campaign event supporting then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris alongside Eva Longoria. The actors got dinner at the Mexican restaurant and immediately fell in love with the food.

“It’s always an honor to get invited to those types of things,” Hernandez told The Republic. “We’re always talking about that, how within our community we can show love and support to each other as much as we can.”

Cocina Chiwas’ Culture Makers event menu included tiradito de pescado made with tuna, birria quesdillas, whitefish ceviche and three types of skewers: chicken and mole, steak and octopus.

How to visit Cocina Chiwas

Cocina Chiwas is open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Culdesac in Tempe.

Details: 2001 E. Apache Blvd., Tempe. 480-916-3690, cocinachiwasaz.com.
