The temperature at the River Walk is plummeting to 13 degrees in June.
That’s because San Antonio’s first ice bar has opened beneath the Aztec Theatre at 200 River Walk. Alamo IceBar transports patrons from the winding River Walk to a subterranean oasis. Commercial grade insulation helps transform the room into a walk-in winter wonderland.
Before entering the low-temperature lounge, guests are provided hooded parkas and gloves to help stand the cold temperatures. The apparel is intended to make for a more comfortable experience while sitting in a room entirely made of frozen water — from its hand-carved icy walls to its frozen seating options. Only the floor and ceiling are not made of ice, according to its website.
There are two rooms to explore, with both likely to give chills. One room has a rocker theme, with records and albums frozen on the walls. The other takes on a more ambiguous Indigenous decor, with Mayan and Navajo elements.
The $22.50 admission for adults and $15 for those ages 10 to 20 also comes with a free shot for adults with an option for a free non-alcoholic drink.
While a hot cocoa or hot toddy may sound like the perfect counter to its cold atmosphere, the bar leans more into flavored spirts and liqueurs, like a churro-flavored whiskey or German peppermint schnapps. Kids can sip on soda or juice, with those under nine years of age able to enter free while accompanied by a paying adult.
Tickets for admission can be purchased online. Visits to Alamo Icebar are in timed 20-minute increments.
Guests at Alamo Icebox are asked to sign a waiver before entering. It is a cashless venue.
The Icebox is open from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and on Sunday. Friday and Saturday nights it stays open until 11 p.m. At 5 p.m., the frigid family fun becomes a business that caters strictly to adults 21 years and older.
Alamo Icebar is at the corner of North St. Mary’s Street and West Crockett Street, along the River Walk.
