Blockbuster Giannis trade reshapes both franchisesStrong debut for Lithuania

Miami Heat rookie Kasparas Jakucionis opened up about the emotions of being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of the blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo deal, admitting the move was difficult at first but calling it a good opportunity.

Kasparas Jakucionis has experienced one of the busiest stretches of his young basketball career.

After hearing his name included in the blockbuster trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat, the Lithuanian guard has now made his debut for Lithuania’s men’s national team, showing why he remains one of the country’s brightest young talents.

Speaking after the trade, Jakucionis admitted the first moments were difficult as he processed a move that sent him from the Heat to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Despite the sudden change, the 20-year-old says he quickly shifted his focus back to basketball.

“Yeah, the first day definitely wasn’t easy,” he said in a post-game interview after an exhibition game with the national team. “I was thinking about it a lot, but then you realize this is a business and there’s only so much you can control. So I’m trying to focus on what I can control, which is putting in the work and becoming a better version of myself every day. I’m not trying to spend too much time thinking about everything else.”

Rather than dwelling on the move, the Lithuanian guard is looking forward to joining a young Milwaukee roster that is expected to enter a new chapter following the departure of Antetokounmpo.

“Like I said, the first day was tough because it was the first time in my basketball career that something like this happened to me, being traded without it being my decision. But I don’t think it’s a bad thing. It’s a young organization with a lot of young players, so I think it will be a good situation for me.”

The Miami Heat completed a blockbuster deal to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks.

In return, Milwaukee received Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 first-round pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.

The trade signals a new direction for the Bucks, who now possess one of the NBA’s strongest collections of young talent and future draft assets.

For Jakucionis, it also creates a clearer opportunity to earn meaningful minutes early in his NBA career.

Strong debut for Lithuania

Days after the blockbuster trade, Jakucionis took another important step by making his senior debut for Lithuania’s men’s national team in an exhibition game against Ukraine.

Head coach Rimas Kurtinaitis immediately placed his trust in the young guard, giving him a spot in the starting lineup.

Jakucionis rewarded that confidence with an outstanding all-around performance.

He controlled Lithuania’s offense throughout the game, finishing with 12 points, 10 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in just over 30 minutes while recording a double-double in his first senior national team appearance.

The debut offered another reminder of why NBA scouts were so high on his playmaking ability. Jakucionis consistently created open looks for teammates, dictated the tempo, and looked comfortable running the offense against experienced international competition.

Although Lithuania suffered a narrow 96-92 loss to Ukraine, the performance provided plenty of optimism for the future.
