Food, music, public art and community pride will take center stage on Saturday, July 11, as eight locally owned restaurants join forces for Brunchin’ on Broadway, a community celebration designed to showcase the Broadway Corridor as one of Northwest Indiana’s emerging dining and cultural destinations.

Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event invites residents and visitors alike to explore Gary through its diverse restaurants, live entertainment, local businesses and public art while supporting entrepreneurs who continue investing in one of the city’s most historic commercial corridors.

Organized by the Broadway Restaurant Coalition, Brunchin’ on Broadway is more than a restaurant crawl. Organizers describe it as a celebration of the people, businesses and culture that continue to shape Gary’s future while honoring the legacy of the city’s past.

Throughout the afternoon, participating restaurants will feature exclusive brunch and lunch specials while visitors enjoy live music, DJs, shopping opportunities, community art activations and family-friendly activities stretching along Broadway.

“Brunchin” on Broadway represents everything Gary has always been about, community, culture, resilience, creativity and opportunity,” coalition organizers said in announcing the event. “This event celebrates the businesses that continue investing in our city, honors the legacy built by those who came before us, and showcases the entrepreneurs who are writing Gary’s next chapter. Gary is open for business, and we invite everyone to experience it for themselves.”

One of the day’s featured attractions will be the Gary’s Got Talent – J’s Showcase, hosted by J’s Breakfast Club. Singers, dancers, spoken-word artists, musicians, comedians and performers of all ages are invited to compete for cash prizes and complimentary meals.

Contestants must register in advance through Eventbrite and will perform during scheduled time slots throughout the event. Winners will be announced after the final performances. Organizers note that participation is limited and available on a first-registered, first-confirmed basis.

Visitors to Saturdays event will also have an opportunity to participate in the Brunchin’ on Broadway Passport Challenge, which encourages guests to visit every participating restaurant along the corridor.

Guests can pick up a passport at any of the participating restaurants and collect a stamp or scan a QR code at each location. Those who complete the passport by visiting all eight participating businesses will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize, one complimentary brunch each month for one year at participating Broadway restaurants.

Organizers say the passport challenge encourages visitors to discover new businesses, explore the entire corridor and support locally owned restaurants while experiencing the collaborative spirit behind the event.

While food is the centerpiece, Brunchin’ on Broadway also celebrates Gary’s artistic and cultural heritage.

The Broadway Corridor is home to several murals and public art installations highlighting the city’s rich musical and cultural legacy, including artwork honoring Vee-Jay Records, Janet Jackson, Deniece Williams and other icons connected to Gary. Visitors are encouraged to explore the corridor, photograph the murals and experience the neighborhood beyond the restaurants themselves.

Coalition organizers say the event demonstrates how independent businesses can work together to strengthen the local economy rather than compete with one another.

Each participating restaurant offers its own distinctive menu, atmosphere and hospitality, but together they create an experience that showcases the diversity of Gary’s dining scene while encouraging visitors to spend the afternoon exploring the Broadway business district.

The coalition also hopes Brunchin’ on Broadway will introduce first-time visitors to businesses they may not have previously discovered while generating additional economic activity for neighboring merchants.

Community leaders have increasingly emphasized supporting locally owned businesses as redevelopment efforts continue throughout Gary, and organizers believe events such as Brunchin’ on Broadway help showcase the city’s momentum and entrepreneurial spirit.

“This isn’t simply a day of dining,” organizers said. “It is a celebration of the people, places, businesses, culture and creativity that continue to make Gary extraordinary.”

The coalition says the event serves as a reminder that Gary’s story continues to evolve through the vision and investment of local entrepreneurs who remain committed to the city’s future.

Whether visitors come for brunch, live entertainment, public art, shopping or simply to reconnect with friends and neighbors, organizers hope they leave with a renewed appreciation for the Broadway Corridor and the businesses that call it home.

The Broadway Restaurant Coalition is a partnership of locally owned restaurants working together through cooperative marketing, community engagement, and destination events to increase visibility for neighborhood businesses while celebrating the culinary diversity and entrepreneurial spirit that continue to define Gary.
