‘Neither Is Owed’ — NFL Analyst Reveals Why Vikings’ Kyler Murray vs. J.J. McCarthy Battle Is a Ticking Time Bomb

The Minnesota Vikings claim they’re holding a true starting competition this fall. Yet, from the moment they signed former two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray, many outsiders believed the battle with J.J. McCarthy was already over.

But that may not be the case. Reports close to the situation suggest that the 23-year-old McCarthy has improved since the last time Vikings fans saw him take the field. If the third-year QB is given a fair shake by the team that made him the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, then anything is possible.

Between Murray, a former No. 1 overall pick, and McCarthy, another fellow first-round pick, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell will let the best man win. Yet, things could get interesting for whoever loses the starting job.

Could Loser of Vikings QB Battle Become Bitter?

The winner of the Vikings’ starting QB competition will be thrilled for the chance to work with one of the NFL’s best wide receivers in Justin Jefferson. They’ll also have the benefit of working behind an above-average offensive line to buy more time to find complementary weapons such as Jordan Addison, Jauan Jennings, and T.J. Hockenson.

While it’s clear that winning the job could act as a career springboard, how will the loser of the QB battle respond?

Count Carter Bahns of CBS Sports as one analyst who believes the Vikings’ QB competition could “get ugly” this fall.

“Neither is owed the No. 1 quarterback role, but whoever loses it will have reason to be discontented,” Bahns wrote. “Murray is a seven-year starter who, at his best, produces among the league’s top half of signal-callers. McCarthy is a recent first-round pick who has arguably not received a fair shake due to injuries.”

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn meniscus in the team’s preseason opener. While he returned to make his official NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2025 season, McCarthy was in and out of the starting lineup seemingly all season, being limited to just 10 games while dealing with various injuries.

As a result, 10 games into his career, McCarthy watched the team that traded up for him make an attempt to replace him with a proven vet. Only, this vet does have something further to prove after being cut by the team that once made him their franchise QB too.

Between the two of them, there’s plenty of motivation to go around. The real drama might start when one of these former first-round picks is forced to grab a clipboard.
