Among those prominent teams in the mix for LeBron James, ESPN’s Windhorst picked the Miami Heat as the best landing spot for the NBA superstar.
Of all NBA teams that are mainly involved in the LeBron James sweepstakes, Brian Windhorst believes that the Miami Heat present the best basketball situation for the 41-year-old superstar.
On NBA Today, the ESPN expert and longtime LeBron reporter argued why the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Philadelphia 76ers are a bad fit for James’ playing role and needs.
“The thing that we’re really trying to hear from abroad today, and maybe we’ll still hear from him, is what he is valuing in wanting to play for his next team. There’s a lot of guessing, a lot of speculation, but one of the things is what is his fit going to be? How does he want to play? If you look at Cleveland, for example, the team that the Cavs currently have is reminiscent of the Lakers team he’s leaving. The Lakers team he left had Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, while the Cavs have James Harden and Donovan Mitchell. The Sixers have a number of ball handlers. The ball-handling role is wide open. In Miami, the history is there in Miami, the star power is there in Miami,” Windhorst argued.
“I’m going to be honest with you, two or three weeks ago when LeBron announced he was leaving the Lakers, I know that Miami was ranked up there, but I didn’t really see it as. As I’ve watched this and had conversations over the last few weeks, Miami continues to make more and more sense to me.”
Heat continues strong push to sign LeBron James
The Miami Heat have been one of the top suitors being identified that could land LeBron James in free agency. After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo in the biggest move of this year’s offseason, the franchise has now set its focus on making another splash by reuniting with the future Hall of Famer.
Right after Antetokounmpo’s introductory press conference, Heat president Pat Riley made it known that Miami is definitely in the hunt to sign LeBron.
Potentially playing alongside Giannis and Antetokounmpo, James would make Miami even more terrifying in the eyes of other contending teams. And as Windhorst stated, he already has that strong familiarity with Erik Spoelstra’s system and the organization’s winning culture after leading them to two NBA championships in four consecutive Finals appearances last decade.
“I can’t guess where LeBron’s head is. I can’t guess where he feels the best fit or what he’s prioritizing. The more you talk about this with NBA teams, even the teams that are recruiting LeBron, the team they see that is the basketball fit is Miami,” Windhorst added.
“The Heat are a very compelling option for LeBron James.”
