“Real value here”Making listening to music a communal experience

Hundred of people waited for hours in front of Cactus Music, to be able to get the Record Store Day exclusive releases, Saturday, April 18, 2015, in Houston.

Record stores have a natural cool to them. Seeing rows of records and CDs meticulously organized, ready to be sifted through, is a tactile exercise that keeps people coming back.

In some ways, it can be a solitary experience at Houston’s Cactus Music. Now, album-listening parties held at the historic record store are becoming its bread-and-butter events where music fans come together to listen to their favorite artists.

Cactus Music is a Houston staple. The record store at 2110 Portsmouth St., right off of Shepherd Drive, opened in 1975 and has since become a legendary spot for all music fans. Their free album listening parties have become its way to bring people together, even more so than live shows.

“If you had told me, like, five, seven, 10 years ago that hundreds of people would show up at the record store just to hear the record where the artist is not present, I would not have believed you,” Cactus Music owner Quinn Bishop told Chron.

Album listening parties are events where a record store like Cactus Music partners with the artist or record label to host an exclusive opportunity for fans to hear the record in full first. There is usually album-related merch, and of course food and drink, and at Cactus, the events are completely free to the public. Recently, the store held listening parties for Gracie Abrams’ new album, Daughter from Hell, Madonna’s new album Confessions II, The Strokes’ Reality Awaits, and is hosting a listening/midnight release party for Phoebe Bridgers’ album Lost Weekend on Aug. 13.

“Real value here”

Cactus Music saw a huge surge in popularity for its dedicated album listening parties in 2023. According to Bishop, this was not always the case, but cultural shifts and changes in the music business have made the parties an essential function for artists and stores like Cactus Music, which has developed relationships with record labels for five decades.

Listening parties have taken off, while booking in-store live performances of touring bands has become more difficult. Bands now routinely charge for access, and Cactus Music’s events are usually completely free entry. Bands also host their own pay-to-meet-and-greet events, so when they come to town, that’s their fan appearance.

“Fans are paying, you know, $100, $200, $300 to meet the artist before the show and get a quick picture or whatever,” Bishop said. “It makes it difficult for us to schedule in-store performances and fan events. But these events have replaced that.”

In-store performances have been taking place at Cactus Music since its inception, and it continues to book bands and artists, including its upcoming show featuring Houston pop-rock band Waterparks. However, album listening parties are becoming something very special.

The exclusivity of hearing an album before its release has incredible value these days. In the past, albums would get leaked, and there was more access to music before it came out. Now, with added protections from record labels, often the only way for fans to hear a highly anticipated album ahead of time is at a listening party.

“If a new album’s coming out, the only tracks you’re able to hear are the ones that are specifically presented by the artist for fans to listen to through their official channels,” Bishop said. “So that creates this anticipation and this mechanism for people showing up, and there’s real value there.”

Record companies know they can promote albums and feed fans through establishments like Cactus. Last year’s release of Twenty One Pilots’ album Breach allowed fans at Cactus to listen to unreleased music and see a 15-minute short film of the band discussing the record that was only made available to participating record stores.

“The industry and the technology have lined up to where you can present these amazing events in venues that the record companies have been partnered with for, like us, 50 years,” Bishop said. “We trust them, they trust us, we’ve been doing business together forever.”

Making listening to music a communal experience

Looking for outlets to listen to music more communally instead of isolated, through headphones or alone in a room, is becoming more appealing, especially for younger audiences. Finding connections through the music they love and coming together with other like-minded individuals to experience albums together is what makes the events so popular.

“For many, especially young people, music is an insular experience,” Bishop said. “And that’s where these events provide a tremendous opportunity to go and enjoy a brand new album, to hear it for the first time with people that love that artist.”

At these parties, fans meet other fans, become friends, and sometimes even more.

“The other thing that’s so sweet and cool is sometimes, you will see couples shopping at the store, and you’ll hear them say where they met,” Bishop said. “They’re music fans that met at one of our listening parties.”

Bishop also remarked that Cactus is proud to be a place for fans to connect. It’s something the store has always done, but album listening parties have added a new dimension to the community around the store. The free listening parties routinely see lines out the door of ravenous fans who want to hear their favorite artists’ new music first with other fans as passionate as they are.

“We’re thrilled to provide a venue for fans to experience new music and be able to congregate with their fellow music fans, ” Bishop said. “That’s what we’ve always done, and it’s never been more pronounced than with these global listening parties.”
