Palmer Luckey’s advice for founders: “If you want to work on technology, work for somebody else”

1️⃣ “If you want to work on nonstop bullshit, start a company.”

2️⃣ “It became clear there were people much better than me at certain things.”

3️⃣ “I had to stop doing the things I liked, and start doing things I was uniquely able to do.”

That last part meant running the company and fundraising instead of building

The trade nobody warns you about before you start

This is a problem at Oculus, where for a long time I was really leading a lot of the mechanical design and the optical design. Why? Because that’s what I like to doing. But it became clear that there were people in the world who are much better than me at those things. And so me playing house and pretending to be an optical engineer, playing pretend as a mechanical engineer was not good for my customers. It wasn’t good for my investors, it wasn’t good for my employees. So I had to stop doing everything that I liked and focus on doing the things that I was uniquely able to do. You know, I like running the company. For raising, doing, fundraising, the thing that I tell college kids usually is if you want to work on technology, work for somebody else. If you want to work on nonstop ******** start a company. And unfortunately that is that is true even today.
