Half Price Books features Dallas author and former principal Theodore Timms talking about his new book The Black Girl in the Classroom. The book discusses how educators can address inequalities and improve success.

Monday, Aug. 3

DFW Startup Week starts Monday and runs through Thursday with a week of speakers, seminars, networking events and other activities to boost entrepreneurs and North Texas’ startup scene. Featured speakers include Megha Tolia, former president of Shondaland on Monday, Daniel Lubetzky, founder of KIND Snacks on Wednesday and Colossal BioSciences CEO and founder Ben Lamm on Thursday. The event takes place at SMU’s Crum Auditorium.

It’s a busy week for North Texas companies reporting earnings, starting with Denton-based Sally Beauty on Monday. Other national names reporting results include Marriott International, Diamondback Energy, Loews Corp., Tyson Foods, Clorox Co. and Snap Inc.

Tuesday, Aug. 4

The Bureau of Labor Statistics Jolts Survey (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) will share insights into whether the economy is still in a “low hire, low fire” environment. 

Earnings: D-FW corporate giants Caterpillar, Energy Transfer and Kimberly-Clark report second-quarter results along with Sunoco, Match Group, Celanese and Primoris Services, which are all headquartered in the region. SpaceX, Merck, McDonald’s, Pfizer and Spotify also report earnings.

Wednesday, Aug. 5

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York takes a swing at analyzing current wage pressure and predicting future wage inflation with its HPW Labor Market Tightness Index.

The region’s largest publicly traded company and medical supplier McKesson reports second-quarter earnings along with Arcosa, Matador Resources Co. and Caris Life Sciences, which all call Dallas-Fort Worth home. National companies reporting earnings include Eli Lilly, Novo Nordisk, Walt Disney, Uber, DoorDash and eBay, which is fending off a takeover bid from Grapevine-based GameStop.

Thursday, Aug. 6

For a look at the volatile international trade sector, Thursday offers up reports including the U.S. Census Bureau’s wholesale trade report and the New York Fed’s Global Supply Chain Pressure Index.

Toyota, with North American headquarters in Plano, reports earnings along with Frisco’s own Keurig Dr Pepper. Irving-based NexStar Media, which is fast becoming one of the country’s biggest television broadcasters, also gives results.

Friday, Aug. 7

Irving-based electricity producer Vistra Corp., which is key to keeping the lights on and AC running during Texas summers, reports earnings results. Also reporting are international conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway, Irving-based chemical maker Fluor and sportswear company Under Armour.
