Phoenix Children’s on Wednesday named Carolina V. Guimaraes, MD, as its new vice president and chief of radiology.
She joins one of the nation’s largest pediatric health systems after five years with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, Guimaraes serves as a professor, division chief of pediatric radiology and vice chair of operations in the department.
Beginning in December, Guimaraes will lead the continued growth and advancement of Phoenix Children’s radiology department, advancing education, research and continuous quality improvement.
“Dr. Guimaraes is a nationally recognized pediatric radiologist who has expanded pediatric imaging services, built nationally respected academic programs and helped shape the next generation of physician leaders,” Phoenix Children’s President and CEO John R. Nickens IV, MBA, said in a statement Aug. 19. “She is an excellent fit to lead our talented radiology team into its next chapter.”
Guimaraes has helped guide UNC through a period of “significant growth and transformation” in pediatric radiology. Her tenure included expanding faculty and clinical capabilities in the division, broadening pediatric subspecialty imaging services, establishing a pediatric radiology fellowship program and fostering a “vibrant academic culture.” As a sign of her success, UNC earlier this year recognized her with its Department of Radiology Mentor Award, Phoenix Children’s noted.
Guimaraes earned her medical degree from the University of Caxias do Sul and completed her diagnostic radiology residency at Hospital Mãe de Deus—both in Brazil. She later completed fellowships in pediatric radiology and neuroradiology at Cincinnati Children’s. Guimaraes is internationally recognized for her work in fetal, neonatal and pediatric neuroimaging and is a sought-after speaker. She also currently serves on the board of the American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology and contributes to several imaging society initiatives in America and abroad.
“I am honored to join Phoenix Children’s and build upon the outstanding work of the Department of Radiology,” Guimaraes said in the announcement. “Phoenix Children’s has established itself as one of the nation’s premier pediatric healthcare organizations, and I look forward to working alongside our exceptional physicians, technologists, nurses and staff to advance patient care, education, research and innovation.”
Phoenix Children’s network spans four hospital campuses, four pediatric specialty and urgent care centers, 12 community practices, 20 outpatient clinics, two ambulatory surgery centers and seven community-service outpatient clinics across Arizona. The health system employs over 1,400 providers working in 75 subspecialties.
