McALLEN, Texas — Raymond Gutierrez, director of education at South Texas Vocational Technical Institute’s McAllen campus, said the school’s new Automotive Service Technician program is designed to prepare students for an industry increasingly shaped by computers, electrical systems and advanced diagnostic technology.

Gutierrez said the automotive industry is evolving rapidly, and technicians are no longer simply replacing mechanical parts. Gutierrez said. “They’re diagnosing sophisticated electrical systems, working on onboard computers, digital technology and advanced vehicle diagnostics.”

He said STVT developed the program to give students extensive practical experience before entering the workforce.

“This program combines classroom instruction with extensive hands-on training, allowing students to spend the majority of their time learning in the lab using modern equipment,” Gutierrez said.

Students receive training in engine repair, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, brake systems, and electrical systems. Gutierrez said the program also emphasizes problem-solving and teaches students to understand why a vehicle problem is occurring rather than simply identifying the problem.

“Just as importantly, we teach students how to think,” Gutierrez said. “Our instructors help students develop diagnostic skills that allow them to understand not only what is happening, but why it’s happening.”

The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level opportunities including automotive service technician, brake technician, tire technician and lube technician.

Gutierrez said support from local employers and industry partners has helped shape the program and strengthen its connection to workforce needs in the Rio Grande Valley.

“Together, we’re building a stronger workforce for the Rio Grande Valley,” Gutierrez said.

McAllen Commissioner Tony Aguirre also encouraged students interested in automotive careers to complete their education, earn credentials and take advantage of hands-on training.

“For those of you who are looking at getting your accreditations, your degrees and hands-on training, the automotive industry would be good,” Aguirre said.

“To anyone considering a career in automotive service, I’d encourage you to visit our campus, tour our lab, meet our instructors and experience our culture firsthand,” Gutierrez said.
