Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15, celebrating the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the country.

This week we look at what the month means here in North Carolina, where the Hispanic population has grown significantly.

Carrboro Mayor Pro Tem Eliazar Posada-Orozco talks about representation in local government, how growing up as the son of migrant farmworkers shaped his approach to public service and what he hopes people take away from Hispanic Heritage Month beyond the food and music.

Selina Lopez with The Hispanic Liaison shares what the month means to the young people she works with, some of the challenges Hispanic and Latino students face in education and how her own journey as a first-generation immigrant now shapes the way she helps the next generation.

And Mariana Rocha-Goldberg with El Centro Hispano discusses what families are experiencing right now, including concerns surrounding immigration enforcement, what she wants state and local leaders to better understand and why young people give her hope for the future.
