BOSTON – The Boston University men’s ice hockey team will add another national champion to its coaching staff as 2009 Hobey Baker Award winner Matt Gilroy will return to BU as director of player development, head coach Jay Pandolfo announced on Thursday.
Gilroy, who co-captained the Terriers to the 2009 national title, joins Pandolfo’s staff after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Harvard. Before that, Gilroy spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the U.S. National Team Development Program. helping the NTDP post an 86-28-3 record during his tenure.
“We’re excited to have Matt join our staff,” Pandolfo said. “He knows what it takes to achieve the highest levels of success, both as a player and as a team, and our guys will learn so much from his experience. Matt will provide consistent, detailed development that will elevate our players’ games to the next level. In addition, he’ll be a great resource for our staff and complement the work we do.”
Inducted into the BU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017, Gilroy enjoyed a decorated four-year career with the Terriers after joining the team as a walk-on. In addition to becoming the third Terrier to claim the Hobey Baker Award, Gilroy is one of only three Terriers to earn All-America honors three different times, including first-team accolades in 2008 and 2009.
“I’m thrilled to be back at BU,” Gilroy said. “Thank you to Coach Pandolfo and Drew Marrochello for this opportunity to return to a place has meant so much to me and my family. I’m looking forward to working with the coaches and players to help guide BU to another national championship.”
After his illustrious collegiate career, Gilroy played 225 games in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers. He was also an alternate captain for the United States at the 2018 Olympics.
Gilroy began his coaching career with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings AAA youth hockey program while also serving as the head coach at RAD Hockey, a premier off-season development program for elite players in the western part of the country.
