A new professional learning offering from the San Diego County Office of Education is designed to help students who are English Learners through fundamental journalistic practices.

The three-session course on Journalism for English Learners uses curriculum developed by Loyola Marymount University’s Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) to support school and district leaders, instructional coaches, and elementary classroom teachers.

The project-based approach to learning allows students to explore topics connected to their families, schools, and communities while strengthening academic language use. This unique program has shown improved student scores on informational writing assessments and English Language proficiency, according to CEEL’s data.

Designed to support multilingual learners at the “expanding level” of English, the course features two tracks for grades 3-6 and grades 7-12.
