BLUFFTON, Sc. (WTOC) – For National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Bluffton showed Morning Break advance technology to help patients regain their independence.
Director of Therapy Operations Meg Foster showed Morning Break Host Camille Syed how to use a touch screen device helping stroke patient track visual progress. Foster also demonstrated the B.U.R.T. robotic machine, which was made to help stroke patients build their mobility. See how they work with the video above.
“We’re actually certified in three programs, Parkinson’s, stroke, and hip fracture,” Foster said. “So when patients come here, they get three hours of therapy a day.”
Medical Director Dr. Vincent Somaio says providing inpatient therapy allows their staff to prepare patients for the return to daily activities after a tragic incident or diagnosis.
“They need medical management and they also improve in function. We stay here between seven days and 21 days depending on their diagnosis. Our average length of stay is about 12 days,” Dr. Somaio said. “And they get good medical coverage. They have physicians that see them just about every day. Very different than a subacute facility where physicians are rarely there. And we have 24-7 nursing coverage. And the therapy is very intensive, 15 hours a week of therapy.”
