The official tour app is now available in Spanish, the Freedom Trail Foundation announced Tuesday.
The app was unveiled as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15, and as the Freedom Trail celebrates its 75th anniversary.
The new offering aims to increase accessibility to educational historic tours as the nation celebrates 250 years since its founding, the Freedom Trail Foundation said in a statement.
“The best stories make you feel like you’re part of them,” said Thomas Dunne, CEO of STQRY, the mobile app technology platform partnered with the foundation. “We’re proud to help the Freedom Trail bring Boston’s history to life for more people.”
The foundation’s app, which first launched in 2011, connects 16 historic Boston landmarks along the 2.5-mile trail and walks tourists through the history of the American Revolution as it unfolded across Boston, the statement said.
It is the only official app with text approved by Boston-based historians and the Freedom Trail Foundation, the statement said.
The app guides users with automatic audio at stops, with GPS mapping and an interactive map that helps them find sites, the statement said. Over 1.5 hours of audio content are available along the tour, including music and guest interviews with historians and academics
“Adding Spanish means even more visitors can experience these incredible stories in a way that feels personal,” Dunne said.
With Spanish-speaking narration as an option to guide tourists, the foundation hopes to help more people navigate and enjoy the trail, the statement said.
“This initiative makes the Freedom Trail more accessible to Spanish speaking residents and visitors alike,” said Suzanne Segura Taylor, executive director of the Freedom Trail Foundation. “We are delighted to welcome more people to visit Boston’s historic gems while using the new Spanish app that is educational and entertaining.”
