Kodiak AI has selected the Dallas-Houston corridor as the first long-haul highway lane where it plans to launch fully driverless commercial trucking operations, the company announced Friday.
Kodiak said it is now consistently completing end-to-end freight runs between its Lancaster, Texas, hub and Houston without human intervention, while continuing to target an unsupervised long-haul launch by the end of 2026.
Texas Becomes Launch Site
Kodiak has long identified Texas as its preferred market for its first on-highway driverless deployment.
In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the company said Texas is attractive because it is one of the nation’s largest freight markets and has what Kodiak described as a generally favorable business and regulatory environment, along with a relatively moderate climate.
Kodiak currently operates revenue-generating autonomous freight service on routes connecting its North Texas operations with Houston, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, and El Paso, according to the filing.
The company said earlier this month that its long-haul Autonomy Readiness Measure reached 93% at the end of August, up from 91% in July.
Kodiak said the measure tracks the percentage of claims and supporting evidence in its long-haul safety case that are materially complete.
The company also cautions that the measure is internally developed and incorporates management judgment, including judgments about the completeness and weighting of evidence.
Freight Already Moving Between Dallas And Houston
Kodiak is not starting from scratch on the corridor.
In April, trucks equipped with the Kodiak Driver began hauling commercial freight between Dallas and Houston for Roehl Transport.
The companies announced in May that the trucks were making four round trips per week.
“Working with Roehl Transport reflects a shared commitment to safety in trucking,” Kodiak founder and CEO Don Burnette said. “By combining our AI-powered autonomous capabilities with Roehl’s safety approach, we’re proving how our technology can enhance efficiency while making meaningful progress toward safer roads at scale.”
Those Roehl operations have been autonomous but supervised, while Kodiak’s newly designated launch lane is intended to support future long-haul operations without a human safety driver in the cab.
Kodiak’s system combines AI-powered driving software with modular sensors and hardware installed on commercial trucks.
Driverless Operations Already Underway In Permian Basin
Kodiak already operates driverless trucks without humans in the cab in a different environment.
The company launched customer-owned driverless commercial trucks with Atlas Energy Solutions in the Permian Basin in December 2024.
As of the end of the second quarter of 2026, Kodiak said 35 driverless trucks were operating commercially in that industrial deployment without humans in the cab.
The long-haul highway launch presents a different operating environment and requires a separate safety case, according to the company.
North Texas Driverless Competition Accelerates
The Dallas-Houston corridor has become a major testing ground for autonomous freight.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, Aurora Innovation launched commercial driverless trucking between Dallas and Houston in 2025.
DX also reported that Bot Auto and Ryan Transportation were preparing humanless Houston-to-Dallas freight operations.
Another autonomous trucking company, Gatik, has expanded freight operations in Texas, including a partnership with PepsiCo that DX reported in June.
Texas has also changed its regulatory framework for commercial autonomous vehicles. As previously reported by DX, companies operating certain commercial automated vehicles must comply with a state authorization process.
Kodiak has not announced an exact date for removing the human safety driver from its Dallas-Houston long-haul operations.
The company continues to target a commercial driverless launch before the end of 2026.
If Kodiak meets that timetable, the Dallas-Houston corridor will add another fully driverless commercial freight operation to one of the country’s most active autonomous-trucking markets.
