One of San Antonio’s few authentic British tea rooms is preparing to close after nearly three years in business in the Stone Oak area.
The Old English Tea Shoppe & Cafe, at 20122 Stone Oak Parkway, was opened in November 2023 by British expatriates Sandra and Peter Marley and business partners Janet and Dr. Robb Kelly. According to the restaurant’s website, the concept was created to give British expatriates a taste of home while introducing San Antonians to traditional English food and tea service.
Since opening, the restaurant has become known for traditional British dishes such as fish and chips, bangers and mash, beans on toast, black pudding and scones. It also built a following for its traditional afternoon tea service featuring finger sandwiches, pastries, scones and tea.
In a Tuesday social media post, the owners announced they are returning to the United Kingdom “due to circumstances beyond their control.” They did not provide additional details but thanked customers for supporting the business.
“We want to thank every single customer who has supported us, shared a meal with us, celebrated special occasions with us, and made The Old English Tea Shoppe part of their lives,” the post said.
The Old English Tea Shoppe’s final day of service will be Oct. 4.
“It has been an absolute pleasure serving our community, and we will forever be grateful for the friendships, memories, laughter, and wonderful moments we have shared,” the post said. “Please come and see us before we close our doors for the final time.”
