Fiesta Birmingham brings community together to celebrate Hispanic culture

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

Fiesta Birmingham, a long-standing celebration of Hispanic culture, brought the community together with live music, food, arts, crafts, and wrestling, while also supporting local students through scholarships.

“Fiesta is for everyone. So whether you’re Hispanic background or not enjoying all the different elements of the Birmingham community and surrounding areas, you know, it takes everyone for a community. So whether you’re Hispanic or you’re non-Hispanic, come out and have a great time. Appreciate culture,” said Foster Ware, a Fiesta Birmingham board member.

The festival took place just days after Mexican Independence Day on September 16, giving attendees a chance to honor that history while celebrating cultures from across Latin America.

“It was our Independence Day, and I really enjoy, like, being here around our surrounded by different cultures, Latin American cultures,” said attendee Hazel Quesada.

“To the independence of Mexico to everybody Latin, so Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras,” said attendee Martin Nepoles.

Organizers highlighted that Fiesta Birmingham is about more than just entertainment, as the event also helps local students further their education.

“We also are given out $20,000 for scholarships. And so giving back to the community for deserving students who wanted to further their education,” said Ware. “And so not only are we having a great festive time, but we’re also giving back through some scholarships.”
