New soybean technology is coming in 2028, but farmers do not have to spend the 2027 growing season waiting for another management option to arrive.

BASF is preparing Nemisphere for commercial launch in 2028. In the meantime, Mike McCarville with BASF says growers can use the tools and information already available to better understand where soybean cyst nematode is having the greatest impact on their fields.

One resource is the SCN Coalition’s profit checker, which allows growers to enter information from an individual field and estimate potential yield loss associated with the pest.

McCarville says identifying where the greatest problems exist can give farmers a starting point for evaluating management changes.

Instead of making changes across an entire operation at once, growers can focus first on fields where the risk is greatest. That provides an opportunity to evaluate new practices, traits or treatments where their impact may be easier to identify.

McCarville says lessons from those higher risk fields can then help guide management decisions elsewhere on the farm.

That approach also reflects one of the themes BASF emphasized throughout its discussion of Nemisphere: managing the problem is about more than waiting for a single new technology.

Over the course of this series, we have looked at the declining effectiveness of some traditional sources of soybean cyst nematode resistance, why egg counts alone do not tell the entire story of field risk, how earlier soybean planting is reshaping waterhemp management, and how additional resistance options could eventually give growers more flexibility when selecting soybean varieties.

Nemisphere will add another tool when it reaches commercial availability in 2028. Until then, growers still have the 2027 season to sample fields, identify where problems are greatest, evaluate management changes, and use what they learn to make better decisions across their operations.

The technology may continue to change, but the objective remains familiar: protect yield while giving farmers more options to manage each field according to its individual needs.
