Fifteen players at Miami Carol City Senior High School have been suspended from the football team after a fight with another team at the end of a game last week.
On top of the suspensions, the Florida High School Athletic Association fined Miami Carol City $1,500, and the school has to hold a compliance workshop.
Players from Miami Carol City Senior High School fought with players from Grayson High School, a school from Georgia. The Florida High School Athletic Association said it made the decision after watching video of the brawl.
Four students are suspended for the rest of the season, nine will miss the next five games and two more will miss Friday’s game against Northwestern.
The FHSAA also placed Miami Carol City on probation, and they’re not allowed to play in the postseason. The Georgia High School Association posted on X that four Grayson players are suspended for one game.
Videos of the fight have been posted across several social media platforms.
In a statement, Miami-Dade County Public Schools said it is “aware of the sanctions imposed by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) following the October 2 postgame altercation involving student-athletes from Miami Carol City Senior High School. M-DCPS expects all student-athletes to exhibit behaviors consistent with our values of respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and self-discipline. The safety and well-being of all students remain our highest priority.”
Sabrina Carrier, who was picking up a student from Miami Carol City High on Thursday, was one of the many people who watched the videos.
“I feel like it’s kind of harsh,” Carrier said. “It’s kind of upsetting because the boys I’m sure love football and to hear they’re getting suspended, it’s like, dang, they probably think they shouldn’t have done it.”
Carrier said it comes down to holding players accountable.
“You will get consequences if you fight on the field while the game is playing,” Carrier said.
Both schools can appeal the decision. It’s unclear if Miami Carol City will appeal.
