One of San Antonio’s most unusual ice cream trucks is opening a brick-and-mortar location in Northwest San Antonio.
Cone N’ Swirl is opening a store in the Braun Pointe shopping center at 9910 W. Loop 1604. The truck was the first local business in San Antonio to offer the Hungarian sweet pastry cones known as chimney cakes.
Chimney cake is a cone-shaped buttery sweet-bread with a caramelized sugar crust made by wrapping strips of dough around a spit and roasting them over heat. On their website, Cone N’ Swirl’s owners Kristina and Gilbert Torres say they learned about the cones on a TV show and set out to try them.
But they quickly discovered the cones aren’t available in South or Central Texas. So they traveled east to Houston to try them and then spent two months perfecting their own recipe.
In Hungary, the treats are typically eaten plain, but Cone N’ Swirl fills them with ice cream. Customers can choose to blend in fruit, cookies, nuts or coffee to the vanilla ice cream that will fill their cone.
Torres said that she doesn’t have an opening date yet, but plans to open the store by the end of the year. Until then, you’ll need to follow Cone N’ Swirl’s ice cream truck around the city to try the Hungarian treat.
