LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s tennis junior Xavier Calvelo led the Aggies at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships, advancing to the finals to earn a spot in the NCAA Individual Championships in Athens, Georgia, on Nov. 17-22. Calvelo becomes the first Aggie since 1970 to reach the NCAA Individual Championships and is the first Pac-12 player in any sport to reach a national tournament in its new era.

Calvelo, ranked No. 4 entering the tournament, reeled off five-straight victories in the main draw of singles play to reach the finals. The championship match against Denver’s Dylan Davies was left unplayed with both players receiving bids to the NCAA Individual Championships. Calvelo’s run is the longest by an Aggie since Bodin Zarkovic claimed the first men’s title for USU at the ITA Regionals in 2023. He is only the fifth Aggie to reach the championship match of the ITA Regionals, also joining David Cierny and Kai Wehnelt on the men’s side in 2022 and 2016, respectively, plus McKenzie Davis’ regional title on the women’s side in 2014.

The product of Las Vegas, Nevada, began his run with a three-set victory in the first round over Nevada’s Remy Tregoures, bouncing back after dropping the first set to win, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the second round against Utah’s Balthazar Huss, Calvelo again outlasted his opponent in three sets to earn a 6-3, 3–6, 6-1 victory. In his lone match against a seeded opponent, Calvelo defeated New Mexico’s 15th-seeded Dario Ciobotaru, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (4), to punch his ticket to the quarterfinal round.

In the quarterfinals, Calvelo defeated Denver’s Theo Coats, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, and in the semifinals with a spot in the national tournament on the line, Calvelo pulled off a straight-sets victory over Montana’s Matthew Upton, 6-3, 7-5, to book his spot in Athens.

Elsewhere in singles action, junior Eliot Nobel was seeded No. 11 entering the tournament and recorded a first-round win over Montana’s Duncan Mccall, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, before falling in round two. Freshman Alvar Lange posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Idaho State’s Jack Calleri to advance out of the qualifying draw, following up the win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Idaho’s Mikolaj Lis in the opening round of the main draw before also falling in the second round. Freshman George Hakopian scored a pair of wins in the qualifying draw, defeating BYU’s TJ Wells (6-4, 6-4) and UNLV’s Samuel Pohl (7-6 (1), 6-3) to reach the main draw but was unable to advance past the opening round.

In doubles play, Calvelo played alongside sophomore Jakub Medved. The duo entered the tournament seeded third overall and recorded victories over Montana State’s Elijah Calaquian and Ethan Masselis (8-2) and Air Force’s Muyang Yi and Langdon Tingleaf (8-4) before falling in the quarterfinals to the tournament’s eight-seeded doubles team. Nobel and Lange were ranked No. 11 entering the doubles draw and recorded a win over Utah’s Julius Bult and Iker Ibarrondo Suarez, 8-4, before falling in the second round.
