Bringing Airline Experience to West EntertainmentExpanding Entertainment and Passenger Engagement Technology

West Entertainment has appointed Al St. Germain as Senior Vice President, Entertainment, as the company expands its content services, artificial intelligence (AI), personalization, and streaming technology offerings. St. Germain spent 14 years at Spafax, where he helped grow its U.S. in-flight entertainment (IFE) business and worked on APEX Media, and has worked with airline customers in more than two dozen countries. He joins West as the company launches their new business division WestDigital, home to a suite of products designed to personalize the passenger experience.

Bringing Airline Experience to West Entertainment

Before joining Spafax, St. Germain worked at United Airlines and Delta Air Lines. His background includes customer experience, branding, marketing, advertising, content creation, and licensing, along with experience leading international teams through changes in technology and entertainment.

“The lessons I learned roaming the halls of two big airlines have stuck with me throughout my career in IFE and beyond,” St. Germain said. “Airlines will always demand the most from their partners. They want solutions that differentiate them from their competition and create more loyal customers while always remaining cost effective.”

During his 14 years at Spafax, St. Germain saw the IFE industry transition from analog content and tape-based systems to digital entertainment and connected passenger experiences. He explained that companies must focus on how new technology benefits airlines and their passengers.

“Technology for technology’s sake is generally not the solution,” he said. “I think we’re finally at a place where we can get as close to the in-home experience, or maybe even better.”

St. Germain will work alongside West CEO Rick Warren and President Kate Groth to expand the company’s entertainment services and strengthen relationships with airline customers.

“I could not be happier that Al is joining our leadership team,” Groth said. “He knows our business inside and out and is a proven leader with an innovative, forward-thinking approach and strong market instincts.”

St. Germain has known Warren, Groth, and the broader West team for several years. He said the company’s flexibility and ability to respond to airline needs played an important role in his decision to return to the IFE industry.

“Airlines want partners, particularly in IFEC (in-flight entertainment and connectivity), who are flexible and adaptable, and West is the epitome of both,” he said. “I wasn’t going to return to IFE unless it was with a company that could be nimble and responsive to customer needs, particularly in this era of ubiquitous connectivity.”

He explained that airlines increasingly want entertainment providers to offer more personalized experiences while keeping costs under control.

“Today’s airline customers have no interest in a history lesson about why something can’t be done,” St. Germain said. “In IFE especially, they want to push past old constraints into a completely dynamic environment that isn’t dictated by content windows or technological hurdles. But it still can’t cost a fortune. That hasn’t changed!”

Expanding Entertainment and Passenger Engagement Technology

West’s technology offerings include WestIQ, its passenger intelligence and personalization platform, Stream, its cloud-based entertainment and streaming platform, and StreamIQ, which combines both technologies to better understand passenger preferences and deliver the most relevant content.

The company plans to build on these capabilities through WestDigital, which connects airline entertainment content with passenger preferences across different IFE systems.

“I’m excited to join as we launch WestDigital, our suite of products that brings real personalization to the passenger experience,” St. Germain said. “The team built WestDigital as an intelligence layer between an airline’s content and the screen, and it’s system agnostic, which is always a challenge in this industry. We’ll have plenty to share in Singapore!”

As airlines introduce more personalized entertainment, they face challenges involving passenger data, connectivity, and the integration of different systems.

“Multiple systems. Data security. Personally identifiable information. Slow connectivity. No connectivity,” St. Germain said. “I could go on, but our team built the entire WestDigital suite, most notably WestIQ, with all those issues in mind. We are not an outside tech company trying to force a solution into IFE. We are an IFE company that knows how to develop the tech.”

West CEO Rick Warren highlighted St. Germain’s experience leading teams through industry changes. “Al’s deep expertise in airline customer experience, paired with his track record of leading high-performing teams through industry transformation, makes him a tremendous addition to West,” Warren said.

West plans to expand its content service provider (CSP) business and attract new airline customers. St. Germain said the company’s relationships with customers and industry partners will play an important role in that growth.

“We’re always looking to add new customers and partners to the West family,” he said. “While things have changed in IFE, the interconnectedness of the supply chain has not.”

Headquartered in Irvine, California, West provides entertainment content and technology solutions to commercial airlines, private aviation operators, and cruise companies. The company maintains its own laboratory and production facilities near major Hollywood studios and aircraft equipment manufacturers.

St. Germain plans to reconnect with industry partners at APEX FTE EXPO in Singapore and focus on supporting West’s team as the company expands its entertainment and technology offerings.

“My primary goal this year and every year is to support the great team at West as they continue to deliver for our customers,” he said. “Do that and the growth and innovation will come.”
