CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a fall-opening scrimmage last week, the UMass rowing team competed in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston this weekend and saw some strong results. The Minutewomen second varsity eight finished ninth out of 39 finishers in the club eight while UMass’ championship eight, competing against some of the best crews in the country, came in 26th.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, 4,800 meter course which features a number of turns. It is completed in a time trial format.
“It was a long weekend at the Charles. It’s a great day for all our athletes participating, and it started with our alumnae eight on Saturday who did a great job going out there racing hard and securing the bid for next year,” said head coach Eric Carcich. “Good for that group; it’s a really fun group.”
The Minutewomen alums finished in 24th out of 48 finishers with a time of 19:04.795.
Meanwhile, the Minutewomen’s 2V impressed in the club eight, which UMass’ top boat medaled in last year. Battling windy and cold conditions on Saturday, the crew finished in 17:33.240, good for ninth overall to secure UMass a bid to the event next year.
“Really proud of that group,” said Carcich. “They’re pretty young in general. They did a really good job sticking to the plan and not getting externally focused, but really just focused on their race, their piece and they executed from checkpoint to checkpoint.”
The weekend capped off on Sunday with UMass’ varsity eight in the premiere championship eight event, facing U.S. national team boats and crews from some top programs in the country like Virginia, Princeton, Yale, Brown and more. The Minutewomen finished in 26th place with a time of 16:13.008, ahead of multiple crews. The Minutewomen were also just one spot, approximately 1.2 seconds behind reigning CAA Champion Northeastern.
“There were definitely some nerves; that’s a much more elevated race,” said Carcich. “It’s the best crews in the country, including the national team, and they did a really good job of staying cool and growing their race and sticking to their plan. Fall racing is about building some confidence and momentum going into the winter months. Both crews did just that.”
The Minutewomen wrap up their fall race schedule on Sunday, Nov. 1 when they compete in the Princeton Chase.
