ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — The Atlanta City Council narrowly approved the sale of the city’s jail to Fulton County on Monday.
After fierce debate, council members voted 8-7 in favor of selling the Atlanta City Detention Center.
Mayor Andre Dickens and Fulton County leaders have been negotiating the $68 million sale for months.
Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat has pushed for the sale, arguing the county urgently needs additional space to address overcrowding at the Fulton County Jail on Rice Street.
The county jail remains under a Department of Justice consent decree to reduce overcrowding and improve inmate housing conditions.
