Mebane, between Greensboro and Durham, is set to open North Carolina’s first Buc-ee’s in 2027. To accommodate the thousands of expected visitors, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has been working on a $50 million road improvement project that includes widening Trollingwood-Hawfields Road and redesigning the Interstate 40/85 interchange in Alamance County. As of Monday, October 19, that project is on schedule, as NCDOT has completed 50% of construction, according to WFMY News 2.
The report adds that bridge widening is 85% complete, water and sewer utilities are 75% complete, and stormwater improvements are 65% complete. The addition of a diverging diamond interchange is intended to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, WFMY News 2 shared.
The Mebane Buc-ee’s was first teased in 2024 and the project broke ground this June. If everything goes according to plan, the Texas-sized travel center appears set to open in October 2027. The finished project is expected to cover 74,000 square feet, offer 120 gas pumps and 600 parking spaces, and employ 200 workers, according to past reports.
Meanwhile, Buc-ee’s is already looking at Rocky Mount, east of Raleigh, for what would be the state’s second Buc-ee’s. The company has requested the rezoning of 34 acres for the project, but the City of Rocky Mount has not provided a timeline for when the rezoning would take place.
Buc-ee’s declined to comment to MySA for this article.
