Thousands of Denver homes and businesses lost power Tuesday afternoon and were expected to remain dark for hours after a car hit a utility pole.
As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, 6,178 Xcel Energy customers were without power in Denver, according to the utility’s outage map. Most outages appeared to be centered in Denver’s Cheesman Park and City Park neighborhoods, with an estimated restoration time of 6:15 p.m., Tuesday.
A car crashed into a pole near 12th Avenue and Detroit Street shortly after 2 p.m. , causing the widespread outages, Xcel spokesperson Sydney Isenberg said.
“Our crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible,” she said.
No outages at voting centers had been reported as of 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Denver County Clerk’s Office.
