Brother’s Keeper cocktail bar opens in Miami Beach

A new late-night cocktail bar from two Miami-grown hospitality teams has just opened in Miami Beach.

Brother’s Keeper on Alton Road is a collaboration between Chris Hudnall and Randy Alonso of Lost Boy & Co (of the downtown Miami drinking establishment Lost Boy Dry Goods fame and the tapas restaurant Tropezon) and Chef Josh Elliott and Ellie Groden of QP Tapas, formerly in the Mayfair House Hotel & Gardens.

The new bar, a 1,335-square-foot space, pays tribute to New York City in the 1980s, with glass blocks and disco balls and plenty of purple neon. There’s a 25-foot wraparound aquarium, too, as well as games like darts.

Hudnall calls the bar “a revival of that unstoppable energy and charisma of the ’80s, combined with the laid-back meets high-standards vibe of Miami Beach.”

The menu features hot and cold snacks with a fair amount of seafood, like tuna poke nachos with ginger sofrito, kimchi aioli, grilled pineapple and crispy onion furikake over fried wonton chips; seafood salad with shrimp, salt cod and fake crab; and “Oysters Crockettfeller” with leek, bacon and artichoke (Sonny Crockett of Miami Vice being a 1980s icon and all).

You can also order chicken fried gator with fried dill pickles if you are so inclined or a Fireman Derek’s Key Lime Pie milkshake for dessert (with booze or without).

The beverage menu offers spins on modern classic, with a particular focus on martinis like the Bread Service (a bite of brioche, vodka or gin, sea salt and olive) or the Lemon drop martini with vodka or gin. There will also be frozen cocktails and slushies on offer during the summer.

The bar will also feature live DJ sets beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

Lost Boy’s Alonso sees Brother’s Keeper a unique blend of past and present — but most of all as a place to have a good time.

“This is the place you go to cross paths with a mystic, fall in love with a friend, buy a drink for a stranger and find good company, most of the time,” he said.
